COMPARE / CONTRAST
By Beatrice Cartwright
When you give 25 very different artists and designers the brief “create a piece that puts across your interpretation of ‘Compare’ or ‘Contrast’. Anything goes! Whatever feels right!” the only thing you can be sure of is to expect the unexpected – and that’s exactly what artist and curator Mr. Gresty set out to achieve!
As an illustrator and typographer Gresty’s most recent group show COMPARE / CONTRAST aims to give the chosen artists and designers a platform by which to show their work and an open brief that allows the artists to be themselves, with the objective of raising their profiles within the London art scene. “I want the visitors to the exhibition to see how much talent is out there and that ‘art’ isn’t just paint on canvas” he tells us.
Since the start of the group exhibitions three years ago they have only seen success “I am a collector of things, desk calendars, badges, packaging, debts… but what I like about collections is seeing all the designer’s solutions together and comparing the results. This is the same for a group exhibition!”. Gresty is always careful with his choice of artists though, which is reflected in the pieces, “I have left the brief open as I trust all of the chosen artists and admire their work”. Set over two floors of The Hanbury Arms, an Islington ‘boozer’ as he describes it, it only seems fitting that he has created a beer mat instead of a flyer to advertise the show. Expect a diverse range of quirky illustration, screen prints, photography, typography, painting, music, film, watercolour, animation and collage, all in 70 x 50 cm portrait format.
COMPARE / CONTRAST is set to open 18 October at 7pm, until 29 November at The Hanbury Arms’, 33 Linton Street, Arlington Square, Islington London N1 7DU.
